ZAMITA Is Empowering Zambia’s Youth For Sustainable Growth

ZAMITA is playing a transformative role in shaping the future of Zambia’s youth by addressing one of the country’s most pressing challenges: the skills gap in priority industry sectors. Through targeted training, modern infrastructure, and strong industry partnerships, the initiative is equipping young people with practical, job-ready skills that support both personal livelihoods and national development.

Since its launch in 2015, ZAMITA has focused on strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to ensure that Zambia’s workforce is prepared for the demands of a rapidly evolving economy. As the project continues through 2025, its impact can be seen in the lives transformed, industries supported, and opportunities created across the country.

Youth unemployment remains a significant issue in Zambia. Currently, an estimated 19.9% of young people aged 15 to 35 are unemployed, limiting economic participation and long-term stability for many families. At the same time, employers across multiple sectors report a shortage of skilled labour, highlighting a mismatch between education outcomes and industry needs.

One of the core challenges lies in access to quality training. Despite the growing demand for technical skills, only around 10% of Zambia’s youth have access to formal TVET programmes. This gap leaves many young people without the qualifications or hands-on experience required to secure meaningful employment.

ZAMITA addresses this challenge directly by strengthening vocational training pathways that align with labour market needs. By focusing on high-impact sectors such as mining, transport, construction, and automotive engineering, the initiative ensures that graduates are equipped with skills that are both relevant and in demand.

The shortage of trained professionals is particularly acute in industries that are critical to Zambia’s economic growth. Mining, construction, and transport form the backbone of national development, yet many companies struggle to find technicians with the right mix of theoretical knowledge and practical competence.

ZAMITA’s training programmes are designed in close collaboration with industry partners to ensure alignment with real-world requirements. Students receive hands-on instruction using modern equipment and industry-standard tools, allowing them to graduate with confidence and workplace readiness. This approach not only improves employability but also enhances productivity and safety across key sectors.

Gender inequality remains a persistent issue in many technical and industrial professions. Globally, women make up less than 10% of the workforce in fields such as heavy equipment repair and mechanical engineering. Zambia reflects this trend, with cultural and structural barriers limiting women’s participation.

ZAMITA is actively changing this narrative by empowering women to enter and succeed in traditionally male-dominated industries. Through inclusive training environments, targeted outreach, and visible role models, the initiative encourages young women to pursue careers in technical fields.

Female students and trainers involved in ZAMITA are breaking long-standing stereotypes, demonstrating that skill, professionalism, and leadership are not defined by gender. Their success contributes not only to individual empowerment but also to broader gender equality and workforce diversity in Zambia.

One of the strongest indicators of ZAMITA’s success is the transition of graduates from training institutions into the workforce. The initiative places strong emphasis on industry exposure, ensuring that students gain practical experience before completing their studies.

Through industry tours, internships, and hands-on attachments with local companies, learners apply their skills in real-world settings. This practical exposure helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace expectations, making graduates more competitive in the job market. Today, many ZAMITA graduates are employed in industries vital to Zambia’s growth, where they contribute immediately and effectively thanks to their practical training and industry-relevant skills.

To keep pace with technological advancements, ZAMITA has invested significantly in infrastructure and equipment upgrades. These improvements ensure that training environments reflect modern industry standards and evolving technologies.

Phase I of the project focused on refurbishing training facilities and installing modern engines, transmissions, an on-site excavator, and specialised tools. Equipment donations from partners such as Volvo played a key role in aligning training resources with the updated curriculum.

Building on this foundation, Phase II introduced further enhancements, including the supply of a Volvo truck and additional engines. Nine classrooms and the automotive workshop were refurbished, and construction is underway for two new workshops dedicated to automotive and heavy equipment engineering. These upgrades create a safer, more effective learning environment for both students and instructors.

As digital technologies reshape education worldwide, ZAMITA has embraced innovation to modernise vocational training delivery. Under the initiative, NORTEC has led capacity-building efforts focused on digital transformation.

With ZAMITA’s support, classrooms have been equipped with reliable internet connectivity and audio-visual tools. A dedicated digital classroom has been established, enabling lesson recording, livestreaming, and content sharing. Additionally, 15 staff members have been trained to develop and manage digital learning materials.

Instructors can now design structured lessons, record professional video tutorials, create quizzes, and manage learner accounts through digital platforms. This shift enhances flexibility, expands access, and ensures continuity of learning—particularly important in a post-pandemic context.

ZAMITA is more than a training initiative; it is a long-term investment in Zambia’s human capital. By equipping young people with practical skills, promoting gender inclusion, modernising infrastructure, and embracing digital learning, the project is laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth.
