Post Profile

  • The University of Exeter, one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities, is inviting applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Geography, within the Faculty of Science, Environment, and Economy.
  • This full-time post is part of the prestigious European Research Council (ERC)-funded BIOSSCI project—Social Science Transformations of Biosecurity.
  • The fellowship provides an outstanding opportunity for early-career social scientists to contribute to groundbreaking international research on biosecurity, animal health, and agricultural systems.
  • The role offers a stimulating and supportive environment, combining high-level academic research with real-world impact, working in close collaboration with experts from the UK, South Africa, and Bangladesh.

Profile of the BIOSSCI Program

The BIOSSCI (Biosecurity in Social Science) project seeks to explore how social, political, and cultural factors shape biosecurity policies and practices. It aims to understand how people involved in farm animal health—such as farmers, veterinarians, policymakers, and scientists—perceive and implement biosecurity measures.
The project investigates the complex interactions between human behavior, governance structures, and scientific innovation in managing biosecurity risks. By examining these dynamics, BIOSSCI contributes to evidence-based policymaking and improved strategies for disease prevention and sustainable agricultural management.

Description of The Task

The successful Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work directly with Professor Stephen Hinchliffe, the Principal Investigator (PI), to design and deliver a comprehensive research program examining UK-based policy and practice in farm animal health and biosecurity. Key responsibilities will include:
  • Conducting qualitative and quantitative research on animal health practices, including surveys, interviews, and participant observation.
  • Engaging with a range of stakeholders, such as farmers, veterinarians, farm workers, policymakers, and scientists, to gather insights into the social dimensions of animal health management.
  • Analyzing and interpreting data to produce academic publications, reports, and policy-relevant outputs.
  • Coordinating with international research partners in Bangladesh and South Africa to support comparative and collaborative analyses.
  • Actively contributing to the broader research environment at the University of Exeter through seminars, workshops, and interdisciplinary engagement.
  • Taking initiative in developing independent fieldwork opportunities and contributing to project development beyond the UK context.
The position offers valuable opportunities for professional growth and international collaboration within a dynamic, globally connected research community. The successful prospective fellow will live in a global and intercultural environment.
