Amref Health Africa: Company Details, Mission, and Programs

Amref Health Africa is the largest African-led and African-staffed international health development non-governmental organisation (NGO). Founded in 1957 (originally as the African Medical and Research Foundation – AMREF), it is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and operates in over 35 countries across sub-Saharan Africa. With a staff of more than 2,000 and an annual reach of millions through 180+ programs, Amref focuses on transforming health systems within communities.

The Vision and Mission of Amref

  • Vision: Lasting health change in Africa.
  • Mission: To catalyse and drive community-led and people-centred health systems while addressing social determinants of health.
  • Core belief: Sustainable health improvement must come from empowered communities, not imposed externally. Amref trains local health workers, strengthens primary health care (PHC), promotes universal health coverage (UHC), and addresses critical issues such as maternal/child health, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, neglected tropical diseases, water/sanitation, climate change, and health emergencies.
Amref aligns its work with Africa’s Agenda 2063, national health strategies, and global goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By 2026 and beyond, it emphasises functional Primary Care Networks (PCNs), digital health innovations, and equity for marginalised groups (women, youth, refugees, people with disabilities).

Programs Details and activities

Amref delivers impact through:
  • Primary Health Care (PHC): Building sustainable PCNs, community health worker training, and UHC acceleration.
  • Maternal, Newborn, Child & Adolescent Health: Improving reproductive health and nutrition.
  • Disease Prevention & Control: Tackling HIV, TB, malaria, non-communicable diseases, and antimicrobial resistance.
  • Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH): Community-led initiatives for clean water and sanitation.
  • Health Systems Strengthening: Training nurses, midwives, and community health workers; policy advocacy; and research.
  • Innovations & Enterprises: Amref Health Innovations (digital tools), Amref Flying Doctors (emergency medical services), and Amref International University (health education).
  • Global Health Security & One Health: Addressing pandemics and climate-health links.

Complementary Activities

  • Amref Flying Doctors (emergency air ambulance and medical services).
  • Amref International University (AMIU) – training health professionals.
  • Amref Health Innovations – tech solutions for health access.

Training and Career Opportunities

Amref offers internships (e.g., graduate programs in public health, monitoring & evaluation, communications), volunteer attachments, and professional roles. Opportunities are posted on the careers page (often in Nairobi HQ or country offices). Examples include Impact/Learning interns and PHC roles. No current vacancies were listed in recent checks; monitor regularly.
  • Careers Portal: (search vacancies, internships, and future jobs).
  • Application: Online via the careers site or specific job adverts.
