Gambian Youth in Agricultural Entrepreneurship

  • The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), in collaboration with the International Trade Centre (ITC), is set to empower young Gambians with practical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills in agriculture.
  • Through four specialized training courses, this initiative aims to build a new generation of skilled agripreneurs capable of driving sustainable growth, creating employment, and reducing youth unemployment in The Gambia.

The Gambian Agricultural Entrepreneurship Apprenticeship

  • Agriculture remains one of the most vital sectors in The Gambia, providing livelihoods for a large portion of the population.
  • However, many young people face challenges, including limited access to training, modern farming techniques, and entrepreneurial guidance.
  • Recognizing this, NARI and ITC have joined forces to bridge the skills gap and encourage youth participation in agribusiness.
  • This collaborative effort aligns with national and international goals to promote youth empowerment, food security, and sustainable agricultural development.
  • The project aims to provide young people not only with technical training but also with the confidence and tools they need to start and manage their own agricultural ventures.

Description of the Apprenticeship

The Apprenticeship Opportunity for Gambian Youth in Agricultural Entrepreneurship Skills. The opportunity has several training components. The initiative will feature four key training courses focusing on high-impact areas within the agricultural sector. These include:
  1. Certified Seed Production – Participants will learn how to produce and manage high-quality, certified seeds that meet agricultural standards. This component focuses on seed selection, treatment, storage, and distribution—crucial skills for ensuring food quality and crop productivity.
  2. Plant Propagation Techniques—This module will train youths in modern propagation methods, including grafting, budding, and nursery management. With these skills, participants can establish and manage orchards, nurseries, and fruit production businesses.
  3. Backyard Fish Pond Construction—Designed for aspiring aquaculture entrepreneurs, this course provides hands-on experience in planning, constructing, and maintaining small-scale fish ponds. Participants will learn about site selection, pond design, water quality management, and fish rearing practices.
  4. Fish and Livestock Feed Formulation—This practical course teaches how to formulate affordable, nutritious feeds for livestock and fish. By mastering feed formulation, participants can support local farmers, improve productivity, and reduce reliance on imported feed.

Eligible Individuals

The program targets Gambian youths aged 15 to 35 who are eager to build sustainable careers in agriculture. A total of 40 participants will be selected, with 10 youths allocated to each of the four training areas. Candidates will be recruited from all regions of The Gambia, ensuring inclusivity and nationwide participation.
The selection criteria prioritize individuals who demonstrate commitment, creativity, and a strong interest in agricultural entrepreneurship. Whether you’re a recent graduate, an aspiring farmer, or a youth seeking self-employment opportunities, this program provides a solid foundation for success in agribusiness.

The Gambian Apprenticeship

Each training course will combine theoretical sessions and practical, hands-on lessons to ensure participants gain real-world experience. Through field demonstrations, workshops, and mentoring sessions, trainees will develop the competence to launch and manage their own agricultural enterprises. By the end of the program, participants are expected to:
  • Acquire technical and business skills relevant to modern agriculture.
  • Gain confidence to start and operate small-scale farms, seed businesses, or aquaculture ventures.
  • Contribute to local food production and job creation.
  • Act as role models for other young Gambians seeking meaningful employment opportunities.

Solving Youth Unemployment Through Agricultural Entrepreneurship

Youth unemployment remains a major socio-economic challenge in The Gambia. Many young people continue to migrate in search of better opportunities, often facing uncertain futures. Through this initiative, NARI and ITC hope to demonstrate that agriculture can be a viable and rewarding career path.
By training 40 motivated youths in key agricultural disciplines, the project is expected to stimulate rural economies, create employment, and inspire broader participation in the agricultural value chain. Empowered with knowledge and entrepreneurship skills, these young agripreneurs will become change-makers in their communities.

Creating a Sustainable Future

  • Beyond individual empowerment, this program contributes to broader national goals, including food security, sustainable livelihoods, and rural development.
  • As trained youths apply their skills, they will help increase productivity, improve product quality, and introduce innovation into traditional farming systems.
  • The initiative also supports The Gambia’s efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to decent work, economic growth, and sustainable agriculture.

The Application Process

Applications for this exciting opportunity will be announced soon. Interested candidates are encouraged to stay informed through official channels of the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) and the International Trade Centre (ITC).
