Unlocking Opportunities: A Fresh Look at the Nedbank YES Programme

Nedbank Yes Programme: South Africa’s youth unemployment challenge is real, but initiatives like the Nedbank YES Programme are making a tangible difference. Launched as part of the national Youth Employment Service (YES) initiative, this programme partners with businesses and government to give young people a real shot at building skills, gaining workplace experience, and stepping confidently into the job market.

Nedbank has been a leading supporter since 2019, becoming one of the most significant contributors among South African banks. To date, the bank has helped over 5,000 young people gain valuable experience, many of whom have gone on to secure permanent jobs or launch entrepreneurial ventures.

What Is the Nedbank YES Programme?

The YES Programme is a business-led effort to tackle youth unemployment head-on. It provides 12 months of paid, quality work experience in a supportive corporate environment. Participants gain hands-on experience, mentorship from experienced teams, and training that enhances employability.
Important note: This is not a learnership, internship, or apprenticeship — it’s a focused one-year placement designed to bridge the gap between education and employment. At Nedbank, YES participants work across various departments, gaining hands-on experience in banking operations while developing professional habits and networks.
The programme starts around May each year (e.g., 1 May 2026 for the recent intake) and includes a monthly stipend of approximately R4,407 (based on recent figures, aligned with national standards).

Who Can Apply?

Nedbank’s YES Programme targets unemployed South African youth who meet these key criteria:
  • Aged 18–29 years
  • Have completed Matric (Grade 12)
  • Are currently unemployed and not studying full-time or part-time
  • Are South African citizens defined as African, Coloured, or Indian under the BBBEE Act?
  • Have not previously participated in a YES Programme with any organisation
  • These requirements ensure the programme reaches those who need it most and creates inclusive opportunities.

What Do Participants Gain?

Beyond the stipend and 12-month employment, the real value lies in:
  • Practical work experience — Real tasks in a professional setting
  • Mentorship — Guidance from supportive teams and leaders
  • Skill-building — Professional development, teamwork, and confidence
  • Better prospects — Many alums land permanent roles or start businesses
  • Networking — Exposure to the corporate world at one of South Africa’s top banks
Participants often describe it as a turning point—a chance to prove themselves, learn from experts, and grow in an environment that values their potential.

Why Nedbank Stands Out

Nedbank’s commitment goes beyond numbers. As a major player in the YES initiative, the bank actively invests in youth development, aligning with broader goals of economic inclusion and sustainability. Participants get to work in a dynamic environment, contributing to real projects while building a foundation for long-term success.

How to Get Involved

Applications for the 2026 intake recently opened (typically in early February, closing shortly after — e.g., 9 February 2026). Check the official Nedbank careers site or the YES Programme portal for the latest details and application links.

Conclusion on Nedbank Yes Programme

If you’re eligible and ready to take the next step, saying YES could be the start of something big. Nedbank’s programme isn’t just about a year-long job — it’s about opening doors, building futures, and proving that, with the right opportunity, young South Africans can thrive.
