The University of Tokyo Announces The UTRIP 2026 Program

The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program (UTRIP) is a prestigious summer research opportunity designed for undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in science and research. The program offers selected students the opportunity to conduct hands-on research at the University of Tokyo while working closely with leading faculty members in natural science fields. Below is a complete guide covering eligibility criteria, program requirements, deadlines, application procedures, and selection details for UTRIP 2026.

Eligibility Criteria for UTRIP Applicants

To be eligible for UTRIP, applicants must meet several academic and personal requirements. First, students must have completed at least one full year of a Bachelor’s degree program at the time of application. Applicants must also be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program—or an integrated Bachelor’s–Master’s program—and be expected to return to their home university after completing the internship.
Only students enrolled at universities outside Japan are eligible to apply. While students from all undergraduate years are encouraged to submit applications, priority is given to third-year students in four-year degree programs and second-year students in three-year degree programs at the time of selection. Applicants must be studying in a natural science or a closely related field and should demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing long-term career goals in scientific research or academia. Additionally, all applicants must be able to:
  • Commit to the entire six-week program on a full-time basis
  • Obtain valid health insurance coverage for the full duration of the internship before arriving in Japan

English Language Proficiency Requirements

UTRIP is conducted in English, so applicants must demonstrate sufficient English proficiency. If English is not your first language, you are required to submit TOEFL, IELTS, or an equivalent English proficiency test score. Expired test scores are accepted, provided you can produce proof upon request. Students who have received continuous English-medium education for the past eight years are exempt from submitting English test scores. Native English speakers are also exempt.

Program Requirements After Acceptance

This program, like most academic projects, has obligations the applicant must fulfill. Upon enrolling in the UTRIP program, selected students must formally agree to fulfill several academic and participation requirements. These include:
  • Devoting full effort to conducting the assigned research project
  • Participating in the program for the entire six-week duration
  • Attending all academic sessions and social events
  • Submit a final written research report, approved by the UTRIP supervisor, within two weeks of program completion
  • Delivering an oral presentation on the scheduled date
These requirements ensure that participants gain maximum academic value and contribute meaningfully to their host laboratories. The knowledge and experience that qualified candidates gain will be of great importance to their home universities and, more generally, to their countries.

UTRIP 2026 Application Deadlines

The UTRIP 2026 application period opens on November 25, 2025, and closes on January 7, 2026, at 17:00 Japan Standard Time (GMT+0900). The recommendation form deadline is January 14, 2026, at 17:00 JST. All application materials and recommendation letters must be submitted through the official online system before their respective deadlines. Late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances.

Selection Results and Notification

  • Selection results will be announced on the UTRIP website in early April 2026. Selected candidates will also receive direct email notifications between mid to late March 2026.
  • Applicants who are selected will be asked to confirm their participation by a specified deadline, so it is essential to check your email regularly and ensure messages from the UTRIP office are not filtered as spam.

Application Procedure and Required Documents

All application materials must be submitted online, and applicants are responsible for ensuring their application is complete. The system does not include a “save” function, so advance preparation is strongly recommended. Read the requirements, and have a checklist before going to the final document.

Required Documents Include:

  1. Online Application Form
  2. Personal Statement (700–1000 words) addressing:
    • Motivation for selecting specific research projects
    • Relevant skills and qualifications
    • Interest in applying to the Graduate School of Science at the University of Tokyo
  3. Resume / CV with relevant academic and research experience
  4. Scanned Official Academic Transcript
  5. English Language Test Scores (if applicable)
  6. One Academic Recommendation Letter
The program offers many opportunities for qualified candidates. Applicants may select up to two hosting labs and rank them in order of preference. Reviewing past UTRIP project reports is highly encouraged to better understand the program’s academic expectations.

Final Notes and Contact Information

Selection is based on a holistic review of all submitted documents. Inquiries regarding the application process should be directed to: utrip.s@gs.mail.u-tokyo.ac.jp. Before reaching out, applicants are advised to review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, as many common concerns are addressed there.
